5. Flywheel and Rotor Removal: Pullers, Tapers, and Timing Clearance

Stator service often requires removing the flywheel or rotor. These parts are commonly held to the crankshaft by a taper and fastener. A wrong puller, impact tool, or support method can damage the crankshaft thread, rotor, or locating surface.

1. Confirm before removal

Check the service manual for thread diameter, pitch, direction, and removal method. Use a puller that fully matches the rotor thread. Inspect the puller threads and pressure tip, and install the crankshaft protector cap when supplied.

2. Apply controlled force

Engage several full threads, keep the puller square, and apply gradual torque. Do not use an impact wrench or a long breaker bar to force a stuck rotor. If it will not release, inspect corrosion, over-tightening, the taper, and puller selection before increasing force.

3. Inspect after removal

Check the crankshaft taper, rotor taper, keyway, locating key, retaining nut, magnets, pickup projection, and harness. Look for scoring, cracks, loose magnets, a crushed key, or rotor-to-stator contact.

4. Reinstall and verify

Clean the taper according to the service manual; do not add lubricant that changes the intended friction. Install the key and rotor correctly, tighten to the specified torque, and verify the pickup air gap. Turn the crankshaft by hand before closing the cover, then repeat the stator resistance, AC-output, and battery-charging checks.

Clearance is model-specific

Pickup-coil clearance cannot be copied from another motorcycle. Measure it against the correct vehicle specification.
